Women in Cuba have equal constitutional rights as men in the economic, political, cultural and social fields, as well as in the family. According to article 44 of the Cuban Constitution, the state guarantees women the same opportunities and possibilities as men, in order to achieve woman’s full participation in the development of the country. Women hold 35% of the parliamentary seats in the Cuban National Assembly ranking sixth of 162 countries on issues of female participation in political life. There has been only one candidate per seat and the National Candidacy Commission decides the persons.
Raices de Esperanza holds yearly academic conferences that encourage students and young professionals to explore Cuba’s complex past, present, and future by interacting with distinguished academics, scholars, activists, and world leaders. The conferences have been held at different campuses throughout the United States, including The University of Miami (2009), Duke University (2008), The University of Pennsylvania (2007), Princeton University (2006), Georgetown University (2005), and Harvard University (2003). Each conference has a different theme. Over the past six years, the conferences have included speakers like the former Spanish President José María Aznar, former Uruguayan President Luis Alberto Lacalle, Pulitzer Prize winner Oscar Hijuelos, Academy Award-nominated actor Andy Garcia, and Grammy Award winner Gloria Estefan.

In 2006, the Raices de Esperanza held its third Princeton and Harvard Cuba Conference at Princeton University. The theme of that year's conference was "Juventud Despierta" or "Youth Awaken" designed to "appeal to cultural identity as a catalyst for greater individual identification with the pursuit of a pluralistic and democratic Cuban society". More than 150 students representing 44 universities across the country participated The conference featured speakers, including Grammy award winning singer Gloria Estefan, panel discussions, a musical performance by the Spam Allstars, conference calls with youths in Cuba and a screening of Andy Garcia's film, The Lost City (2005 film).

This year's conference was held at the University of Miami, in Miami, FL. The theme was GenerAccion RDE: Generation in Action. The Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Carlos Alvarez (mayor) welcomed over 200 students from all over the country that gathered at UM to discuss the state of affairs in Cuba and what action to take to help the people in the country. The conference lasted four days from Thursday until Sunday. The keynote speaker for this year's conference was Andy Garcia. The Cuban-born actor and film producer gave a talk “Visions of Today, Hopes for Tomorrow”, where he spoke for an hour and a half about the importance of maintaining one’s roots in the face of forces pressuring for change as well as the necessity of reaching out to those within the island.
